Ronnel Mas, a 25-year-old social studies teacher at Taltal National High School in
Zambales was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after posting on
his Twitter account an offer of a P50-million reward to anyone who could kill President
Rodrigo Duterte.
According to NBI, operatives in Dagupan started tracking his location,
coordinating with barangay officials and was later on arrested in Barangay Poblacion
North in Sta. Cruz, Zambales
Consequently, after his arrest, he was brought to the NBI’s office in Manila for
presentation of the perpetrator to the Department of Justice for inquest proceedings in
the charge of inciting to sedition in relation to the anti-cybercrime law, as well as for an
alleged violation of the Code of the Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials.
Mas was remorseful to NBI and President Duterte about his controversial tweet. His
father is also appealing to President Duterte to forgive and excuse his son from criminal
charges.
President Duterte’s spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque in his statement said that if
there is a prima facie case against Mas, a charge must be filed against him. Meanwhile,
DOJ Secretary Guevarra said that he will leave the case to the investigating prosecutor.
He further stated that apology is not among the grounds for extinguishing criminal
liability and that one cannot feloniously injure another and then later on will say “sorry”
and be able to escape criminal liability.
