She did report the first incident because she thought and hoped that her
partner would change.
Asked if she would file a case of VAW as woman S16 stated, “Yes, mag-file
ako if ever siguro, naghiwalay naman kami sandali pero pinatawad ko
naman kasi pabalik-balik siya sa akin na humihingi ng tawad (Yes, I will
file if ever maybe, we will break up but only for a short while but I already
forgave him because he repeatedly came back and asked my forgiveness).”
Researchers’ Observations:
S16 is physically, emotionally and
psychologically abused woman who has signs to have acquired the
Battered Woman Syndrome.
Analysis: The conditions of S16 are unknown to her own self, as she
believes that airing her grievances is enough and this already constitutes
adequate reporting of VAW.
Survivor 17
S17 is from Tumaga, who had been married and had 4 children. The first
incident of violence she experienced is when her husband got jealous, as he
insulted her, slapped her face, kicked her in her thighs and boxed her in
any part of the body, especially when he was under the influence of liquor.
He did not care whether they disturbed the neighborhood, as shaming his
wife seemed to satisfy him.
She thought that it was too much and she knew that it was no longer right
to physicallly and emotionally hurt her as the children were growing older.
“Talli lang man el barangay, sabe yo, jende comigo deja. Por eso masquin
ta sentí yo duele, ta agwanta anay yo por causa na maga bata kay malisud
tamen si engranda sila no hay el tata (The Barangay [VAW Focal Team} is
just there, I know, and won’t leave me. That’s why even when I get hurt, I
bear pain for a while because of the children because it is also difficult if
they grow up without a father).”
And if the violence would happen again she would never think twice to
report it immediately whatever it takes.
“Para na maga bata, ta pensa yo antes yo decidi si debe ba yo con ele
demanda na caso pero makalastima man tamen por eso no hay mas yo
porsigue ([It is] for the children [that] I think before I decide if I must file a
case against him but he is also pitiful that’s why I no longer pursued [the
matter on filing a legal suit]).”
