Fig. 7 shows the trend in the mean number of daily
rainfall events which exceed the 99th percentile of rainfall
intensity, whilst Fig. 8 shows the trend in the frequency of
daily rainfall in excess of the 99th percentile. Again, in each
figure an increase is represented by a (+) sign, a significant
increase with a (▲) symbol; decreases are shown using a (−)
symbol and significant decreases with a (▼) symbol.
Table 3 below provides a detailed summary of the data
used in the maps including the frequency, significance at
the 5% level (p), direction and magnitude of the trend at
each synoptic station. Figures highlighted in grey are those
showing high significance at the 95% confidence level and
show an overall low level of statistically significant results.
The results of this analysis show that although the period
1951 to 2010 has seen increases in both the frequency and
intensity of extreme daily rainfall events at most stations
throughout the Philippines, unlike temperature extremes, the
majority do not show a high level of statistical significance at
the 95% confidence level.
Six of the 30 stations showed significantly increasing
trends in the intensity of extreme rainfall events. Stations
from Laoag, in the far north of the Philippines to Cotabato in
the far south exhibited a significant increase in rainfall
intensity and there is no identifiable spatial pattern to the
distribution of rainfall intensity within the country. The
