o Children as young as 14 years old are already helping to earn for the family and
are engaged into fishing. As a result, some of these children dropped-out from
school.
o Some of the participants shared that their husbands are doing dual work just
to provide for the needs of their family.
● Tinatawag mo ba ang sarili mo na kababaihang nasa pangisda? (women fisherfolk) Bakit
oo? Bakit Hindi? (Ano ang tawag mo sa sarili?)
o One participant shared that she just learned, during the FGD, that women
can also be called fisherfolk because of the belief that only men can be called as
such.
o Because of the realization, they now come into agreement that they also have
the right to be called as fisherfolks because of what they are doing.
● Sa panahon ng COVID-19 may nagbago ba sa iyong mga gawaing mag-asawa? Pamilya?
o A lot of changes had happened because of the pandemic. It affected especially
their source of income. Because of this incident, women were forced to go fishing
and help their husband to earn additional income for the family.
o They were restricted to enter the fish port where they usually get their products
which they sell in the market. Because of this restriction, their income was
greatly affected considering that the support which they receive from the
government are not enough for the entire family.
The participants considered themselves women fisher folk engaging in small-scale fishing. For
them, fishing has been their source of living – provide fish for direct consumption within their
households, communities, and in the markets.
The participants were asked about how is their typical day during the pandemic. Some of
them answered:
a. “Ngayon na may pandemic tayo, pegado…pegado talaga. Hindi basta basta makapasok sa
fishport kasi maraming proseso...” (During this time of the pandemic, we are struggling. The
entry to fish port is controlled due to requirements needed.) “Tuloy pa rin ang trabaho, pero
konti-konti lang. Makabili naman minsan ng bigas, pero pangbigas lang talaga.” (We can still
go to the fish port, and earns minimum amount just enough to buy our basic needs.)
b. “Akoang trabaho, nagalibud ko ug isda… lisud Sir karon na pandemic, kung walay isda,
walay suroy.” (I usually peddled in nearby communities. The situations during this pandemic
made it hard for us to do our fishing activity.)
c. “Ang akong tinda nasa Alabel… border man, di kami makapasok. Wala gyud, down gid tu
sa akong negosyo.” (Due to border lockdown, I could no longer sell in the market. It has
caused a huge impact on my economic aspect.)
Their fishing activity has declined. They could no longer sail every day because of restrictions
imposed in their community. They could not sell in towns due to border lockdown.
