60-79% respectively. A score of 3 and 4 is given if the annual income generated from
fishing is 40-59% and 20-39% respectively. Lastly, a score of 5 is given if less than 20% of
the annual income is generated from fishing.
Level of awareness to climate change: Level of awareness refers to the extent of knowledge
of fishers on climate change and its impact to their livelihood. A score of 1-2 is given to those
who have no idea or barely has an idea about the climate change and its impact. For those
who have moderate knowledge about the climate change and its impact is given a score of
3-4 and lastly, a score of 5 is given to those who know and understand the climate change
and its impact very well.
Access to information: The fisher’s ability to cope with the disasters brought about by climate
change depends on their accessibility to climate-related knowledge. This provides them the
necessary information regarding the effects of climate change and the possible measures to
perform to reduce destructive effect brought about by climate related incidence. A score of 1
is given if there is no access at all to any sources of information and a score of 2 is given if
there is at least 1-2 access to information. A score of 3 and 4 is given if there are at least 3-4
and 5-6 access to sources of information respectively. Lastly, a score of 5 is given if there
are more than 6 accesses to any sources of information regarding climate change.
Adaptive strategies: This criterion refers to the precautionary measures undertaken by the
fishers before, during and after extreme weather events. No precautionary actions done by
fishers against extreme weather disturbance is given a score of 1. If precautionary actions
are done by the fishers but insignificant to prevent the effects, a score 2 is given. A score of
3-4 is given if there is a significant but minor precautionary measure done by the fishers and
lastly, a score of 5 is given if there is more adequate and significant precautionary measure
done by the fishers of the area.
Literacy: The fisher’s literacy determines their ability to find other income-generating
livelihoods. Those who belong to out of school youth is given a score of 1, and those who
belong to elementary non-graduate or graduate is given a score of 2. A score of 3 is given to
those who belong to high-school non-graduate and a score of 4 is given to those who belong
to high-school graduate and skilled. Lastly, a score of 5 is given to those who belong to
college student or college graduate and those with vocational degree or is an ongoing
vocational student.
Gear modification: Fishing gear modification or replacement is a measure of the fishers’
adaptive capacity for a more effective fishing effort. A fishing gear without any modification
done in the last 10 years is given a score of 1-2 while a fishing gear done with some
modification within the last 10 years is given a score of 3-4. A score of 5 is given to a fishing
gear that has been fully modified and fully operational.
Community support systems and programs: The high adaptive capacity of a community may
be attributed to the strong community support systems or programs for climate change.
These support systems or programs usually include seminars, workshops, and training that
inform and educate people on the current issues of climate change and how they can deal
with the impacts through adaptation, risk reduction, and diversification of livelihood. No
programs or support systems against climate change done in the community are given a
score of 1-2. A score of 3-4 is given if there are at least 2-3 programs or support systems
