2.1. SCORING FOR SENSITIVITY
The sensitivity factors used in the Fish Vool are the trends or changes in catch rate
from the previous catches 20 years ago, the size as to length of catch fishes, the
dependence of the community to the fishing resources, the household age structure and
their health conditions. Each of these sensitivity factors are scored relative to the information
generated from the questionnaire given to the key informants. Scores range from 1 to 5, with
1 being the lowest sensitivity and 5 being the highest sensitivity.

Catch rate comparison: Trends or changes in catch rate over the years may show the effects
in fishing. In this variable, catch rate refers to the difference between the total catch by
weight (kg) of the present catch of fishers and that from at least 20 years ago. Increase in
present catch rate as compared with the catches obtained 20 years ago is given a score of
1-2 (low sensitivity). If catch rate is comparable to that of catches obtained 20 years ago,
giving normal catch rate, score of 3-4 (medium sensitivity) is given. A score of 5 (high
sensitivity) is given to a decrease in present catch rate as compared with that of catches 20
years ago.
Length of fish catches: The age or size of captured fish is important stock parameters for the
assessment and prediction of exploited fish species. An increase in length more than 5
centimeters (cm) is given a score of 1, while an increase in length with greater than 2 but
less than 5 is given a score of 2. A decrease of less than 2 cm in length of fish catch is given
a score of 3 and a decrease of greater than 2 cm but less than 5 cm in length is given a
score of 4. A score of 5 is given to a decrease in more than 5cm in length of fish catch.
Dependence on resource: This variable provides information on the importance of fisheries
to their household and well-being of the community. High dependency of the community to
fishing as their livelihood is more sensitive to the effects of climate change. A community or
household with less than 20% dependency on fishing is given a score of 1, and a score of 2
is given if the dependency on fishing is about 21-40%, both signifies low sensitivity. A score
